Bomb squad called to Birkirkar

Threats were made against Birkirkara Mayor Desirei Grech, and a bomb disposal unit was called to the local council on Thursday night, PN Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione has said.

The police, contacted by this newsroom, said they received a call at 9pm last night to assist the Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit.

The police told The Malta Independent that the Council had been receiving threats, and a suspicious person was seen entering the local council garage, and then leaving, and that something might have been done to the council members' vehicles. Police dogs assisted in the search, the police said, but nothing was found.

PN Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione posted on social media. "I have just returned from the Birkirkara Local Council building, where I went following a request from Party Leader Bernard Grech, who received information that members of the Bomb Disposal Unit had to be called in after threats were made against Mayor Desirei Grech while she was performing her duties along with the Local Councillors. Full solidarity, on behalf of the Party Leader, myself, and the entire Nationalist Party, with Desirei, and full condemnation of any form of threats, wherever they may come from, against anyone who contributes to public life for the good of our country."

Outgoing PN Secretary General Michael Piccinino also expressed solidarity with the Birkirkara Mayor after the incident. "No one should be threatened, especially because of their civic duties," he said.

Posting on Facebook, Birkirkara Mayor Desirei Grech said: "After facing various threats and harassment, which instead of decreasing, continued to increase, I had to take the necessary steps and will proceed with legal action against all those involved. I condemn all forms of action aimed at discouraging me and preventing me from working for the benefit of Birkirkara. Thank you to the Police and the Bomb Disposal Unit for responding immediately to my call."
