The two MEPs who voted against the wishes of Prime Minister Robert Abela have shown that they are willing to walk against the Prime Minister's line, Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech said.

He delivered his first comments following PN MEP Roberta Metola's re-election as the President of the European Parliament on Tuesday.

"This continues to confirm the great fighting within Labour, the factions, Robert's faction and Joseph's faction, the faction against Robert, a great confusion," the PN Leader commented.

Grech said this after PL MEPs Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard posted on social media that they had chosen to abstain from voting in favour of Metsola despite Abela saying that he would be supporting her re-election. It is unknown at this moment as to how the third PL MEP, Thomas Bajada, voted.

"I've said before that I do not wish to comment on the PL's internal fighting," Grech remarked. "It worries me, but that is their challenge that they must face and solve... However, it worries me when those problems begin impacting the government and our country on a national level, and now those problems are even impacting us at an international level, even in the European forum."

Grech said that this shows how the Prime Minister has lost control of the party and the government.

The Opposition Leader remarked that Metsola's re-election is a great honour for the Maltese and Gozitan people, as well as the PN. "A Maltese person managed to be re-elected as the President of the European Parliament, and she increased her support... It is not possible not to be proud that one of us was again given the mandate to lead the European Parliament."

He concluded by saying that the PN MEPs will be working in favour of the Maltese and Gozitan people's quality of life, and will continue working for greater funds which the country can benefit from. "We are united and concentrated," he said.

Former PN Leader Simon Busuttil, who is also currently the Secretary General of the European People's Party Group within the European Parliament, said that Metsola was an exceptional EP President. He said that her election two years ago was already historic for Malta, and that it is something that the country is very proud of.

"She unites us by making us proud and gives us a sense of satisfaction... It will not happen again in our lifetime," Busuttil said.
