The big freeze prompted thousands of households to stock up on bread, fire logs, tea, coffee, and soup.

Amazingly, shoppers in one supermarket chain splurged to buy an extra 100,000 additional loaves in 48 hours. SuperValu reported a doubling in demand for these staple goods amid the bitter cold snap.

A spokesperson said: “Milk, butter, and egg sales surged by over 147% in weather-impacted areas. Over 100,000 additional loaves of bread sold in just two days. Sales of fire logs and firelighters surged by 61% ahead of freezing temperatures. Demand for tea, coffee, and soups spiked as shoppers stocked up on comforting essentials.

“Demand for milk, butter, and eggs more than doubled, particularly in Munster and Leinster counties under orange weather warnings. There was also a surge in demand for bread and bakery items as shoppers prepared for the icy blast. Wrapped bread was the clear favourite, peaking on Saturday with one-in-three shopping baskets containing a loaf."

He added: "That is a jump from the typical one-in-five seen in early December. Shoppers were stocking up, with a 7% increase in bread items per basket. In the worst weather-affected areas, chilled product sales skyrocketed by a staggering 384% last Sunday.

“People prepped for cosy home-cooked meals with fresh meat and fish seeing a significant boost. There is more than 50% increased demand. Their favourites included chicken fillets and round steak mince snapped up by shoppers. Comfort foods were also in hot demand.

“There was a 33% rise in home-baking items as families embraced warm, freshly baked treats. As well tea, coffee, and soups, fuel sales spiked, with fire logs and starters up 61% and briquettes soaring 80.4%.”

SuperValu serves over 2.9 million customers every week and has 220 stores nationwide. Its managing director Luke Hanlon said: “The ongoing freezing weather conditions have had a clear impact on purchasing habits."
