Man dies after car enters water in Grand Canal as gardai seal off scene
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road traffic incident Grangeclare West, Kilmeague, Co Kildare, yesterday evening to contact them.
A man has died after a car plunged into the Grand Canal in Co Kildare on Sunday. The fatal road traffic incident happened at Grangeclare West, Kilmeague at around 8pm.
Emergency services were called to reports that a car entered the water. A man aged in his 40s was recovered from the water and treated by the National Ambulance Service, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body has since been removed for a post-mortem investigation. The scene remains sealed off for examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit, and access along the canal is currently restricted.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to a fatal road traffic incident Grangeclare West, Kilmeague, Co. Kildare, yesterday evening, Sunday 22nd December 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 8pm when it is believed a car entered the Grand Canal at the above location.
"A man, aged in his 40s, was recovered from the water and treated by crew from the National Ambulance Service. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The body of the man has been removed from the scene and a post mortem will take place.
"The scene is currently held for examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit. Access along the canal at this location is currently restricted.
"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Those with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam, from the area at the time are asked to provide it to investigating Gardaí.
