'A tremendous shock' - Tribute

Tributes have poured in following the sudden death of a 'bright and bubbly' young man from Co Sligo.

Seán Flanagan, from Gortarowey in Drumcliffe, passed away suddenly on Saturday (November 23) aged just 24 years old.

A message shared on RIP.ie stated that Seán 'will always be remembered and loved by his heartbroken parents Thomas and Martina, his loving sisters Elaine and Laura and his adored girlfriend Rachael. Will be sadly missed by his much-loved Uncles, Aunts, Godparents, cousins, neighbours and his many close friends.'

Seán's friends and family have paid heartfelt tributes to the popular young man, who has been remembered as 'an amazing person who brought life and joy into every single interaction'.

Seán was a former pupil at Grange Post Primary School, with the school paying tribute to their former student in an emotional statement shared on their Facebook page.

"It is with great sadness we express our sincere condolences to the parents- Thomas and Martina; and the siblings - Elaine and Laura, as well as friends and family of our former student Sean Flanagan on his untimely passing," a spokesperson for the school said.

"We had the pleasure of Sean for his second education. He was a bright and bubbly young man full of energy who was popular with his peers and his teachers. He graduated in 2019 with a bright future ahead and great plans.

"It is such a tremendous shock for his life to be cut short so suddenly. Our thoughts and prayers lie with his beloved family and friends at this most difficult time.

"May Sean's beautiful soul rest eternally in peace."

Sean was a member of Drumcliffe Rosses Point GAA in his youth, with the club paying tribute in a message which read: "There simply aren't the words to express the extent of the club's sympathy to the Flanagan family in Gortarowey following the passing of our former club player Seán Flanagan this weekend.

"To Martina, Thomas, Elaine and Laura - and Sean's girlfriend Rachael - we are all thinking of you at this desperately sad time."

Heartbreaking tributes to Seán were also shared on RIP.ie, with one mourner writing: "Seán was an amazing person, someone who brought life and joy into every single interaction. I was always delighted to see him, a privilege on each and every occasion. It’s difficult to accept that I’ll never get the chance to laugh with him again."

Another person added: "Our Deepest Sympathy to Martina, Thomas, Elaine, Laura, Rachael and all Sean’s extended family, a much loved young man. Sean touched the lives of everyone he met and will always be remembered. He brightened the darkest day, many lovely memories of Sean from School days, Community Games, Football Games and meeting him on his travels. He will be greatly missed".

A former teacher of Seán's at Rathcormac National School in Sligo hailed him as "an absolute gentleman", adding that he was "such a lovely, kind young boy, full of fun, a credit to his family".

A former classmate of Seán's said he remembered him 'as being so full of fun' who was 'always making the rest of us laugh', as he described his death as 'a truly heartbreaking loss'.

Seán's funeral is due to be held on Wednesday at St Colmcille’s Church in Rathcormac, with burial afterwards in Rathcormac Cemetery. The funeral mass can be viewed live on https://www.churchservices.tv/rathcormac.
