Next Leicester manager: Big update on former Manchester United star succeeding Steve Cooper
Ruud van Nistelrooy has emerged as a major candidate to replace the sacked Welshman following his exit from the King Power Stadium at the weekend
Ruud van Nistelrooy is on Leicester City’s list of potential managers.
The Foxes are compiling a shortlist of replacements for Steve Cooper, who was sacked 48 hours ago — and the Dutchman’s name is on it. Graham Potter was one of the early frontrunners to succeed the Welshman, while David Moyes was understood to be another name in the frame.
However, van Nistelrooy - whose name was linked with the club last summer - has now entered the reckoning.
And interestingly, his price has shot in from 33-1 to 1-2 overnight with bookmakers Bet365 - suggesting that there has been concrete interest. Leicester are keen to make a swift appointment as they have matches to come in the next seven days against Brentford at the GTech Community Stadium and then a home fixture against West Ham.
The Foxes parted company with Cooper on Sunday after he'd effectively lost the dressing room.
The club dropped the bombshell that they had dismissed the Welshman a little more than 24 hours after they suffered a home defeat to Chelsea.
A statement read: “Leicester City Football Club has parted company with Steve Cooper, who leaves his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.
“Assistant Manager Alan Tate and First Team Coach and Analyst Steve Rands have also left the Club. Steve, Alan and Steve depart with our thanks for their contribution during their time with the Club and with our best wishes for the future.”
Club chairman and owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, known as ‘Top’, was present at the game against Chelsea and it is understood that he was aware of the internal grumbling and elected to pull the plug on Cooper's tenure.
