'We are stronger when we stand together.' Family and friends of missing Galway swimmer thank community
A search for Galway woman Máire Ní Fhátharta has been ongoing since Tuesday after she went missing during her daily swim at Silverstrand Beach
The family and friends of missing Galway woman Máire Ní Fhátharta have thanked the local community “from the bottom of their hearts” for their outpouring of support in searching for the “caring, hilarious, goofy, wise and driven” swimmer.
Search teams full of volunteers have tirelessly scouted the Galway Bay area in recent days after Máire went missing during her daily swim at Silverstrand Beach one week ago, on Tuesday, November 19.
The alarm was raised when Máire, a passionate Irish language advocate in her 30s who worked with Foram Chois Fharraige as an Irish Language Planning Officer since August, didn't show up for work.

Now, the heartbroken friends of the beloved Galway woman praised the community of volunteers for the “endless strength and support” during this “challenging” time, thanking them for the “generosity, kindness, and determination” shown.
In a post on the Instagram page BringMáireHome, those closest to Máire have shared that they are “forever grateful” for the efforts of the community.
“As we have faced these challenging times, we want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for the endless strength and support you’ve shown,” A post on the BringMáireHome Instagram page.
“Though the road has been difficult, your unstoppable efforts and dedication have been nothing short of inspiring. We plead that you all keep going for Máire. As together, we have proven that even in the toughest of times, we are stronger when we stand together. Your generosity, kindness, and determination to help us has made all the difference in our search for Máire.
“It’s in times like these that we truly see the power of community as well as the power of a good person, Máire was such a special person. She shared so much of herself with the people she loved. She was caring, hilarious, goofy, wise and driven.
“She would be so proud to see the groups of people out searching because then maybe she could see the amount of people she has impacted and touched in her life. Having friends is valuable, but having a special friend is priceless. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.
“We want all involved to know we are aware of your commitments to Bring Máire Home. Services, volunteers, sharing posts, lighting candles, praying, helping with food, donations, everyone on foot and everyone out at sea. We see your dedication. We will be forever grateful. Let’s keep pushing and keep all of these efforts going and we will Bring Máire Home together.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up to aid the search with Maire's friends and family asking for support for volunteers. The GoFundMe has raised €216,943 of the €200,000 target. To donate head here.
