Gladiator actor Paul Mescal reveals heartache at Kildare GAA losing manager Kieran McGeeney
McGeeney led Armagh to the All-Ireland title this year.
Hollywood actor Paul Mescal says he’s not sure why Kildare GAA let Kieran McGeeney leave the county senior football team.
McGeeney managed the Lily Whites from 2007 to 2013 but left the role after losing a ballot to county delegates.
Just a few weeks later, he would go on to join the Orchard County where he still remains having lifted the All-Ireland Championship after a decade in charge.
“The big sickener was Kildare losing Kieran McGeeney,” said Mescal, who was promoting the new Gladiator film this week with Off the Ball.
“I’ve no idea what on God’s name what happened. I know it was the clubs that came up against McGeeney. Watching him, I weirdly felt a massive sense of pride watching the Armagh footballers this year.
“I think, the amount of work that went in, that’s a 10-year plan. Kildare got five years into theirs. That (winning an All-Ireland) was totally on the table.
“You saw how much the players bought into him, both in Armagh and also in Kildare. I think losing the All-Ireland semi-final (against Down in 2010) was a stepping stone and I don’t think Kildare were ambitious enough to keep him on.”
“I mean, like, can you imagine what would happen in Kildare if we won an All-Ireland?”
Mescal captained the Kildare minor side and played U21 county football before veering off to become an actor, he won a Leinster minor title, and played in the Kildare side who lost to Dublin in an U21 Leinster final.
