A motorist in Kilkenny had his car seized after a number of offences were detected by gardai attached to the Roads Policing Unit.

Gardai were out on patrol on Monday when they were alerted to an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) notification for a car travelling along the Callan Road.

When they stopped the vehicle, gardai discovered that not only was the motorist's car uninsured, but it was also untaxed with no NCT and was being driven by a learner unaccompanied who 'was sitting ON his seatbelt'.

The vehicle, a Kia Ceed, was seized and placed on the back of a truck before being towed to be impounded.

Gardai posted about the incident on their Facebook page, where they shared a joke at the motorist's expense.

"The driver of this Kia Ceed came a cropper a few minutes ago when the ANPR activated on one of our Roads Policing Vehicles," a garda spokesperson said.

"The motorist, now a pedestrian was travelling along the Callan Road in Kilkenny when stopped. To compound matters not only was his vehicle uninsured but also untaxed with no NCT being driven by a Learner unaccompanied sitting ON his seatbelt.

"A trip to the impound was called for. On the bright side it's unseasonably mild this afternoon so it's a perfect opportunity to get those steps in."

The rules in Ireland for learner drivers are quite clear, according to the Road Safety Authority, learner drivers must:

  • Always have someone with a full driving licence in the car with you when you are driving on a learner permit. This person must have had their driving licence for at least two years. If the Gardaí stop you, and you are not accompanied by a qualified driver, they can detain the car.
  • Display L-plates on the front and rear of the vehicle at all times while driving. The plate should be a red ‘L’ on a white background and should not be less than 15cm high with a border of at least 2cm.

Furthermore, motorists in Ireland are obliged to display evidence that they have paid their motor tax on the windscreen of their vehicles. Gardaí have the power to impound your vehicle if you drive without tax.
