Separate murder investigations underway after Bank Holiday weekend killings
Separate murder investigations

Two separate murder investigations are underway after horrific Bank Holiday weekend killings in Wexford and west Dublin.

Two people were still being held in custody on Monday in connection with the murder of Stephen Ring (27) whose badly injured body was found in water near a quarry at a remote part of Forth Mountain in Shelmalier Commons, Co Wexford on Sunday afternoon.

Now it has emerged that gardai suspect Mr Ring, who went missing on October 15, may have been lured to his death amid a drug debt row with local criminals in the area.

Sources say the young man is suspected to have been dropped to a location in Ard na Dara, Clonard in the early hours of the morning, where it is believed he was beaten to death.

His remains were then dumped in water in the remote Carrigfoyle quarry, where it is believed he lay dead for up to 12 days.

Gardai were led to the location of the body after receiving information - and a woman and man known to Mr Ring were subsequently arrested.

Several more tributes have since poured out on social media for Mr Ring, with pal Brandon O’Reilly posting: "You didn’t deserve that. Until we meet again, RIP bro."

Pal Micaela O’Connor Brogan siad: "My heart is broken. Really can’t believe it. Rest in peace Ste,” while Emma Wall wrote: "Heartbroken. Heart of gold. We’ve lost an absolute character. You were so loved. Sleep tight, we’ll all love you forever."

Meanwhile on Bank Holiday Monday, gardai were alerted to the scene of another suspected murder - this time in Lucan, west Dublin.

Officers made the grim discovery of the remains of an Eastern European man (40), inside a house in the quiet estate of Old Bridge Park at around 8am.

A man in his 20s, who is understood to be known to the victim, was arrested and was still being questioned by gardai on Monday night.

Sources say it is suspected the victim and suspected killer had a row which turned physical in the early hours of the morning.

In a statement gardai said: "The Coroner has been notified and the services of the Garda Technical Bureau and State Pathologist have been requested.

"A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Lucan Garda Station.

"The scene has been preserved for a forensic and technical examination and a post-mortem examination has been arranged.

"Investigations ongoing."

News of the tragedy shocked locals who watched on as the man’s remains were removed from the scene - while members of the Garda Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination.

Several local politicians all reacted to the news, with local Cllr Francis Timmons telling us: "It's awful to hear about a murder in Lucan, my thoughts are with his family and friends and I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact Lucan Garda Station.

"It's a shock to local people on a bank holiday weekend that something so horrific could happen in our community."

Local councillor Paul Gogarty meanwhile said: "It's terrible to hear this news. My sympathies to the family of the deceased.

"Oldbridge Park is the main long entrance road into Oldbridge, a small estate in Lucan. It's not an area you would normally associate with a huge amount of antisocial behaviour or any criminal behaviour.

"While there are some regular turnover rented properties where people would not necessarily get to know their neighbours, it's generally a fairly settled area with an active WhatsApp group of engaged residents and would have a lot of young children living in the area and going to local schools.

"Issues raised normally don't go beyond things like speeding, bad parking and traffic congestion so it would come as a bit of a shock to people living locally. I hope everyone is ok."

Councillor Joanne Tuffy added: "I sympathise with the family of the man and anyone affected."
