Tributes have been paid to a young man who was killed in a road traffic collision in Co Sligo over the weekend.

Sean McGuinness, 22, tragically lost his life following a horrific crash on the R294 at Drimina in Tubbercurry in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Sean, from the Lissaneagh area in Lavagh, was fatally injured in the single-vehicle collision, which occurred at around 3.45am that morning. His funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Sean's family paid a heartbreaking tribute to the 22-year-old in a message shared on RIP.ie in which they say he 'will be forever loved and cherished' by his parents, Joseph and Julie, his sister, Niamh and his grandparents, Colleen and Kevin.

They added: "He is also deeply mourned by his uncles, Eugene and John and their wives Eileen and Emer, aunts, Maura and Fiona, and their husband and partner Conor and Jon, his cousins, Tara, Dillon, Síofra, Matthew, Éabha, Lily, Liam, Sheena, and Owen, as well as by his extended family, neighbours, and wide circle of friends."

Sean attended primary school at Achonry National School in Tubbercurry, with the school's principal, Cora Kivlehan, paying tribute to the popular young man, who she described as 'a wonderful young boy with a radiant smile'.

"On behalf of the staff and BOM of Achonry National School we would like to extend our heartfelt and deepest sympathies to Julie, Joe and Niamh on the very sad passing of your beloved son, and brother, Seán," Ms Kivlehan said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are very much with you, and all of Seán’s extended family members and friends, at this very sad and difficult time.

"Seán was a wonderful young boy with a radiant smile. We will remember Seán with great love and fondness. The lovely memories of his warmth and kindness and the happy times shared here together in Achonry N.S. will always stay with us. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas síoraí dá anam."

A number of Sean's friends and families also offered up their own tribute, with a family friend writing: "A heartbreaking tragedy to befall a lovely family. Our hearts go out to Joe, Julie, Niamh and extended family. May the memories of his lifetime joys, happiness & achievements bring you some console in these harrowing and sad days ahead. You are in our thoughts and prayers."

Another mourner added: "Our deepest Condolences to the McGuinness family, relatives and friends on the devastating loss of Seàn. He will be fondly remembered by Patrick his work colleague. A very respectful and polite young man. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad and difficult time. May he rest in eternal peace."
