LA Olympics hopes still alive for Irish boxers after crucial EGM vote
The Olympic Federation of Ireland had warned that the IABA's status as the sport's governing body in this country was under threat
Hopes that Irish boxers can compete at LA 2028 have been revived after the Irish Athletic Boxing Association passed a crucial vote in today's EGM at the National Stadium.
The IABA is on course to join World Boxing in the coming months after member clubs voted in favour of removing the International Boxing Association from the association's constitution.
The Olympic Federation of Ireland had threatened to withdraw recognition of the IABA as Irish boxing's national body if links were not cut with the IBA.

IABA chief Niall O'Carroll said this week that if that didn't happen it would be "catastrophic" for the hopes of young Irish boxers with Olympic dreams.
The International Olympic Committee is refusing to deal with the IBA - and refused to allow the controversial governing body to run boxing at the last two Games in Tokyo and Paris.
The vote went against the wishes of the IABA board last year but yesterday's EGM was called after 43 clubs petitioned for another vote and this time the resolution was passed.
Seventy three of the 145 clubs that registered for the EGM voted in favour, 40 voted against and 27 votes were spoilt, which meant that the 51% requirement to pass the resolution was met.
It is expected that the IABA will vote on joining World Rugby in the near future as the OFI monitors the 18-month-old body's bid to become the sport's globally recognised federation.
If that doesn't happen, boxing will remain off the agenda for LA.
