City of Troy will retire to stud at Coolmore’s base in Fethard, County Tipperary after next month's Breeders' Cup Classic.

The two-year-old superstar went undefeated in his debut season and has won three times from four races this season, with that sole blemish coming at Newmarket in May following a long-absence from racing.

The Aiden O'Brien-trained superstar bounced back from that disappointment in tremendous style by winning the Derby at Epsom less than a month later. Further wins have followed at Sandown and Newmarket, with November's Classic at Del Mar set to be the swansong for one of the top flat stars in recent times.

“He's definitely the best we've ever trained, no doubt about it,” said trainer Aiden O'Brien.

“Everything he has done from the start has suggested that. He's the most amazing horse with a fantastic temperament and an incredible stride.

"He just never seems to tire and is really only getting going at the end of his races so Ryan has often had a job to pull him up. We still don't really know how much more there is under the bonnet. I think he'll make into an unbelievable stallion.”

Many bookies have the colt as 2-1 favourite to end his career in spectacular fashion next month, but with the likes of Fierceness, Forever Young and Sierra Leone in the field, the final assignment could perhaps end up being the toughest.
