Lee Carsley has continued to draw on his experience as England under-21s boss by calling up Tino Livramento and Curtis Jones to the senior squad.

England are preparing to face Greece and Finland in Nations League qualifiers and had been hit by the withdrawals of Morgan Gibbs-White, Ezri Konsa and Kobbie Mainoo due to injury. The Three Lions host Greece at Wembley on Friday night before heading to Helsinki to face Finland on Sunday.

Liverpool midfielder Jones is yet to win his first cap for England, but was called up by Carsley’s predecessor Gareth Southgate in May. The 23-year-old is a Carsley favourite, having scored the winning goal in England’s 1-0 win over Spain in the Under-21s European Championship final against Spain last summer. He is a like-for-like replacement for Manchester United ’s Mainoo, who limped out of his side’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Similarly, Newcastle right-back Livramento has been promoted from the under-21s to provide cover after Aston Villa’s Konsa suffered a hamstring injury against United. Livramento was a part of Carsley’s squad for last month’s games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, but didn’t get onto the pitch. Carsley already has Cole Palmer, Angel Gomes, Levi Colwill and Anthony Gordon among his former under-21s stars in his current squad.

The new arrivals at England’s training base, St George’s Park, means interim boss Carsley has 23 players to work with. Harry Kane is training by himself following an injury scare with Bayern Munich.

The England captain suffered an ankle injury and also had treatment on a groin during his team’s 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether he plays against Greece on Friday, with Carsley due to speak to the media on Wednesday evening.

Jack Grealish missed training on Wednesday due to a minor knock. The Manchester City winger has been one of the main beneficiaries of Carsley’s arrival as manager, having started both Nations League matches recently after missing out on selection for Euro 2024.

Grealish has spoken openly of his disappointment at that decision from Southgate. "I think everyone can imagine I was absolutely devastated,” he said. “It was probably one of the most difficult periods of my life. I think my whole career has been a lot of ups and downs, but, yeah, that was definitely right up there in terms of the downs. I'll be honest with you, I didn't really agree with it.”

Harry Maguire was left out of the squad for the upcoming matches, despite featuring in the last squad. “I played in his first game in charge and yes, I did really well,” said Maguire. “I did really well in Ireland. There's no hiding away from that.

“So, no, I was a little bit surprised, I must say. But obviously I back his decision and he's told me I'm part of the future, so we'll see what comes in November. I had a chat with the manager and he spoke about his reasons. He told me I'm a big part of the future and he just wants to see the other lads playing in this camp.”
