Ireland AM presenters have issued an apology to their “disappointed” viewers after an "irresponsible" segment.

Recently, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued an allergy recall of their famous Domino's Garlic and Herb and Honey and Mustard dips after the pizza giant shared they could contain traces of peanuts.

Chatting on their morning time talk show last week, presenters Tommy Bowe, Muireann O'Connell and Alan Hughes discussed the recall, but the segment ended up upsetting viewers watching from home, RSVP Live reports.

Tommy said: "I would only get a Domino's just for the dip." Alan then asked him: "Can they not make them without the traces in it?", to which he laughed as he replied: "They probably will but it won't taste the same."

Alan then began laughing before moving on to people who sell dips on eBay for extortionate prices. He added: "So come here, they've been doing this for how many years? And now they're only realising that there's peanuts in it. How many years have you been buying the pizza with the dip? Like, come on!"

The clip was shared across social media but some Virgin Media viewers were not too happy that the presenters found allergies to be a "laughing matter".

One viewer penned: "I'm glad you found it funny because as a parent of a child with a peanut allergy who carries an EpiPen with him, it's far from a laughing matter."

Another wrote: "Very irresponsible of you Tommy Bowe Muireann O'Connell and Alan Hughes to find this a laughing matter.

“Take the opportunity to raise awareness and apologise to the allergy community, living with life-threatening risk of anaphylaxis. professionalism and research goes a long way."

While a third added: "The worry for allergy sufferers and their parents in the last couple of weeks is nothing to be laughed at. The misinformation is shocking". A fourth expressed that Tommy, Alan and Muireann were being "ignorant" and "insensitive" during the segment.

On Monday’s Ireland AM, the three presenters, joined by the Clinical Director of Allergy Ireland Dr Iseult Sheehan, issued an apology for the segment on allergies.

Tommy explained: "This follows on from a segment that we did last week that Alan has got us into a lot of trouble about.

"We were surprised at the time that the items had remained on the market, and we had a bit of a giggle about while it possibly contained peanut traces in the ingredients."

Muireann added: "Now, some people have been in touch highlighting how allergies can become a severe health issue so we thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss it.

"And if we offended anyone, we are incredibly sorry. It was not our intention at all."
