Irish soccer star injured in horror road smash as car bursts into flames and club 'await update'

An Irish soccer star is recovering after she was injured in a weekend road smash.
Savannah McCarthy, who has been capped by the national team 10 times, was rescued from a burning car after the collision on the border between Limerick and her native Kerry on Sunday evening.
It’s understood she suffered leg injuries in the collision between two vehicles near Tarbert at around 8pm. The defender, who is from Listowel and also plays for Shamrock Rovers, was rushed to hospital in Limerick following the incident.

Two men were also injured in the incident, and were also taken to hospital. A spokesman for Shamrock Rovers told The Mirror it was waiting for an update on her condition.
He said: “The club is awaiting news on Savanah's condition, we know that she is receiving excellent medical support and we hope for the best in her recovery.”
But media reports in Kerry today say she suffered serious leg injuries in the incident, which involved two vehicles, a car and an SUV. Ms McCarty was in the car, the two men were in the SUV.

A spokesman for the FAI declined to comment. And gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward. A spokesman said three people were injured in the incident – but none of them suffered life-threatening injuries.
He said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a two-vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on the N69 at Glin, Co. Limerick on Sunday, 6th October 2024.
“The incident occurred shortly before 8pm. A woman (20s) was brought to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening at this time.
“One man (40s) was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening. A second man (50s) was taken to University Hospital Kerry to be treated for injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them.
“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area at the time between 7.45pm and 8.15pm and have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Newcastle West Garda Station on (069) 20650 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
