A reception in the White House to mark 100 years of US-Ireland relations has been postponed by US President Joe Biden.

The news was confirmed hours before Taoiseach Simon Harris is due to travel on Tuesday.

The US has said that the event cannot go ahead as it was due to take place at the same time that Hurricane Milton is expected to hit Florida.

Mr Harris will still travel to Washington DC to meet President Biden on Tuesday afternoon, his spokesman confirmed late on Monday night.

A reception was due to take place in the Rose Garden in the White House to mark 100 years of US-Ireland relations. Both President Biden and Mr Harris were due to make speeches at the event, which was to be attended by several hundred people.

The Taoiseach’s spokesman confirmed late on Monday evening that this event has now been postponed. It is unclear when it will take place.

“President Biden and Taoiseach Simon Harris spoke [on Monday] night,” he said.

“The President asked that they would proceed as planned at the Oval Office on Wednesday but, given the grave threat posed in the United States by Hurricane Milton, they would postpone the reception in the Rose Garden until a later date. The Taoiseach will proceed with all other parts of his programme in Washington.”

Mr Harris will travel to Washington on Tuesday afternoon following the Cabinet meeting in Government Buildings. He will also take Leaders’ Questions. In addition to the meeting with President Biden, Mr Harris will attend a number of other engagements in Washington.

President Biden invited Mr Harris to travel to Washington at the United National General Assembly in New York in September.
