A prisoner who was facing deportation has been found dead in his cell.

The inmate, who was facing deportation hearings over being an illegal immigrant, was found dead in his bed in Dublin’s Cloverhill Prison this morning. It is suspected the prisoner died of natural causes.

The incident comes just two days after another prisoner, Martin Salinger, was found dead in the same prison. Salinger was stabbed to death by another inmate - and a murder investigation has been launched.

Salinger was stabbed to death with a piece of a broken kettle on Saturday morning. We revealed today that he was also badly assaulted on September 20.

Both incidents happened in Cloverhill Prison in west Dublin, where Mr Salinger, 43, was locked up awaiting drugs and firearms charges. Mr Salinger, who was from west Dublin but had a last address in Bettystown, Co Meath suffered a horrendous ordeal in the 5am attack.

And sources have told us it was a prolonged attack. “It went on for a good while,” a source said last night.

In the previous attack, he was badly assaulted by three other inmates in another cell – and the suspicion is that it was related to a drugs row behind bars. He was suspected of smuggling drugs into the prison - and sources say it’s believed he was attacked in relation to that.

Mr Salinger was well known in the Ballyfermot area and was involved in a horse and carriage business. Tributes have since poured out on social media for Mr Salinger, who was known to some pals as “Cramps.”

“Rip cramps me owl pal, may you get the best bed in heaven, you’ve left everyone who you met with great memories and laughs that will last a lifetime (sic),” one pal wrote.

His son also paid tribute in a social media post writing: “Love you Da,” along with love heart emojis. Mr Salinger had been charged over a gun and drug seizure on August.

A handgun and €20,000 worth of cannabis were recovered by the Dublin Crime Response Team and the Garda Armed Support Unit, at a property in Ballyfermot on August 15. He was not regarded as a senior criminal and ran his own horse and carriage business in central Dublin.

In a statement the Irish Prison Service said it "can confirm the death of a person in custody in Cloverhill Prison on 5th October 2024. This incident is being investigated by An Garda Síochána and it would not be appropriate to comment further.

"All deaths in custody are also investigated by the office of the Inspector of Prisons. The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends."
