Dramatic images show the moment that a plane appeared to catch fire with almost 200 passengers onboard.

The terrifying scenes happened on a Frontier Airlines flight as it made a "hard landing" at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, on Saturday. In shocking footage, flames could be seen underneath the aircraft.

According to reports, Flight 1326 was arriving from San Diego when smoke was first detected in the cockpit and the pilots confirmed there was an emergency. Authorities said they are investigating the emergency landing. One Twitter user shared footage of the incident and said firefighters rushed to the scene.

They said that an evacuation took place and added: "Caught me by surprise. Firefighters sprayed the aircraft with foam, according to @liveatc they'll be evacuating by stairs (not blowing any slides)."

Airport officials said the plane “experienced a hard landing where basically tires blew". The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said 190 travellers were on board when the frightening incident happened in the afternoon. In a statement, the FAA said airport emergency crews extinguished a fire on the plane’s right engine after it landed.

Witnesses at the airport reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the underside of the plane. Frontier officials said there were no reported injuries and all of the passengers exited the plane using the stairs and were transported to the terminal.

Frontier issued a statement on Twitter and said: "The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew were evacuated via airstairs. No injuries were reported, and passengers have been bussed to the terminal. There were a total of 190 passengers and 7 crew members on board." The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Sunday that it was launching an investigation into the incident along with the FAA.
