Conor McGregor's tired showman act has long since run out of road

Many have become weary of Conor McGregor's various scrapes with the authorities - from driving offences to hitting an old man in a pub to gatecrashing the cage in the 3Arena to berate a referee.

There are people who are afraid to open their fridge door in case Conor McGregor pops out.

Puffing an unlit cigar, with a glass of whiskey in his hand, wearing a shirt that is even louder than himself. Talking nineteen to the dozen in a curious accent that is unlike any Dub we've come across.

Even though his fighting career is a fading memory, it's impossible to escape from McGregor. Boxing still courts him on big nights, with some broadcasters fawning over him.at every opportunity. And his Forged Stout brand still sponsors Matchroom boxing cards.

Day after day, photos and video clips of McGregor pop up. Bono might argue otherwise, but he may well be the most famous Irish person on the planet.

When you have the likes of Elon Musk and Russell Brand pushing you for the position of President of Ireland - a ludicrous notion - then it's clear you have global clout.

But a sea-change has happened at home, where McGregor has far fewer cultish followers than in the past.

Many became weary of his various scrapes with the authorities - from driving offences to hitting an old man in a pub to gatecrashing the cage in the 3Arena to berate a referee.

It's also the case that many have grown wary of McGregor - to put it mildly - because of his views on immigration.

Next month marks a year since a night of rioting in Dublin, and McGregor was busy online that week

He posted about going to war. He used gun and bomb emojis. He called for buildings that were ''taken over'' to be ''evaporated''. His X posts alone had views of over 10 million each.

Complaints were lodged with the Gardai over McGregor's posts. Tánaiste Micheál Martin described McGregor's comments as ''absolutely disgraceful''.

In July, McGregor was busy on social media again, posting videos of the former Crown Paints factory in Coolock on fire, and putting the boot into the government while calling for an election.

A couple of weeks later, McGregor was in court, appearing before Judge David McHugh on road traffic offences. McGregor drove into a bus lane, jumped a red light and nearly collided with another vehicle.

He was found guilty, banned for driving for two years, and was fined €5000. The court heard McGregor had 20 previous convictions, mostly for minor road traffic matters.

A civil case where a woman is alleging McGregor assaulted her is expected to go before the courts later this year. McGregor denies any such claims.

There have been so many negative headlines about him here that it was surprising to see Arsenal players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka kicking around with McGregor following Arsenal's win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Our understanding is that McGregor wasn't a guest of Arsenal, that he was there through a third party and that he made his own way down to the pitch after the game.

And it's believed that he was asked to leave the pitch after a couple of minutes.

It does seem as if there was nothing prearranged about McGregor making himself the story - yet again - on a big night for Arsenal.

But you'd have to wonder how much longer this can go on? McGregor put a lot of work into his brand. Plenty feel it's an increasingly toxic one. Don't expect to see him on the Emirates pitch a second time.
