Rio Ferdinand has torn into Manchester United ’s ‘embarrassing’ performance against Tottenham despite Bruno Fernandes ’ “p*** poor” red card.

The Red Devils were dismantled by Spurs at Old Trafford on Sunday. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring after just a few minutes, with second-half strikes from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke securing victory.

The hosts’ task was not made any easier after Fernandes’ dismissal. Chris Kavanagh awarded him a red card for a perceived high challenge on Spurs midfielder James Maddison.

Despite slamming the decision, Ferdinand believes that the red should not detract from how poor the performance actually was. Sharing a video on Twitter, the former United defender said: “We’ll get to the red card in a minute but Van de Ven ran through the whole team and I look at it, happened midweek as well.

“Where’s the pride man? I just don’t know. That fight don’t seem where it should be. The Bruno red card I think is p*** poor as well. I think it’s a p*** poor red card. In no day and age should that ever be a red card. A straight red card? No way, I can’t have it.

“But do not let that distract from the fact that we were terrible. We were an embarrassment today. The red card shouldn’t be an excuse for anybody at Man Utd now. It shouldn’t be an excuse for anyone at the football club.

“We were terrible. We were terrible to watch. It was a terrible kind of representation of who were are and what we are right now. Giving the ball away constantly. I’m ranting here but I can’t help it. I’ve sat and watched the game and just thought what the hell are we?”

Ferdinand was not the only one to criticise the decision. Fernandes himself also suggested that his sending off was harsh despite apologising to his teammates in the aftermath.

He said: “Just [I want] to say I let my teammates down, one man down. I appreciate everything was tougher for them. We didn’t start well 11 v 11 and they did very well, we conceded more goals [after] but it was difficult to cover all the spaces. We can take away that the resilience of the team was always there and I’m very proud of them.

“Nobody likes to be sent-off and it’s not a good feeling seeing my teammates run a lot trying to get the result; that’s what they did, they tried everything.”

“I don’t take [the decision] as everyone wants to see it, not with my studs. I take him with my ankle,” added. “He [Maddison] said it’s a foul but never a red card, that’s what he said. You can see it’s never a red card - we have to look at many other incidents, I get kicked and never see the red card coming so quick.”
