An animated Jack Grealish was seen shushing taunting Newcastle fans in the aftermath of Manchester City 's 1-1 draw at St James' Park.

The champions endured a frustrating afternoon on Tyneside despite the fact that Josko Gvardiol nudged them into the lead with a classy strike in the first half. A penalty from Anthony Gordon restored parity after the break and neither side could find a winner.

City are now level on points with Arsenal after drawing successive games. And it was a rough afternoon for Grealish, who was targeted by the home supporters.

The England star, 29, is an unpopular figure among the Newcastle fanbase after he aimed an ill-judged jibe at Miguel Almiron back in 2022 during boozy celebrations after winning the Premier League title.

When asked to reveal City's secret after retaining the title, he quipped: "There were two secrets — one, Riyad (Mahrez), take him off the pitch, as soon as possible. He played like Almiron."

Grealish would later go on to apologise for remarks - but that hasn't washed with Newcastle fans. He was taunted as he left the pitch following Saturday's draw and took the bait, responding with a "shush" gesture, per The Chronicle.

He was visibly frustrated given the afternoon's events but was soon led away after responding to the fans' jeers before departing down the tunnel, leaving St James' Park to celebrate a positive result.

Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic admitted post-match that the champions should be happy with a point given the threat Newcastle posed during the game.

The Croatia international said: "It's a tough place to come. There is a lot of intensity and tactical duels so it is tough. So it is a good point. But we came here to win and we had our chances. Maybe we made a little mistake for the goal and the penalty but these things happen. This time we have to be happy with a draw."

He added: "They pressed well. Like I say it's a tough place to come because the intensity is high.

"It was not easy but I think we coped well. We had a few chances and could have scored, maybe in the second half we needed that second goal. We didn't get it and in the end it is a draw."
