Longford chiefs are pressing on with their county senior football championship despite the ‘phantom point’ controversy that shows no signs of going away.

The latest twist saw Carrickedmond pull out of a relegation play-off with Longford Slashers yesterday.

On a dramatic day, Carrickedmond’s decision came after Leinster GAA sent the club’s appeal into the result of a recent group game back to be reheard by Longford GAA.

Carrickedmond drew with Mullinalaghta a fortnight ago but saw the result of their tie changed from a draw to a defeat after an error in the recording of the scores by the match referee.

This meant that instead of going into a quarter-final Carrickedmond dropped into a relegation play-off.

Mullinalghta appealed the result of the game and after the referee acknowledged a mistake in the scorekeeping, the Longford Competitions Control Committee (CCC) upheld their case.

It is unclear what will happen now if a newly-constituted Longford CCC rule in Carrickedmond’s favour. This could throw the Longford Championship into chaos.

Even if they rule against Carrickedmond, the club could still go to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA), the highest power in the GAA.

If they win with either body this could have major ramifications for both the Longford and Leinster club championships.

Mullinalaghta play Granard and Abbeylara face Rathcline in a senior quarter-final double header at Pearse Park today.

Last night holders Killoe defeated Clonard 2-10 to 1-10, while Colmcille edged out Clonguish on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-8 in a Pearse Park double header.
