Prince Harry has opened up about the terse eight-word riposte he fired back at King Charles after being informed that his wife, Meghan Markle, wasn't welcome to be by the late Queen's side during her last moments.

As he rushed to join his dying grandmother in September 2022, it emerged that while the Royal family convened, Meghan was pointedly excluded.

On his way to Scotland, wishing for Meghan to accompany him, Harry clashed with his then-Prince of Wales father. Despite Charles' firm stance that Meghan should stay behind, Meghan did not journey with Harry; instead, he headed to Aberdeen alone.

In his tell-all memoir 'Spare', Harry describes a tense phone conversation with Charles en route: "He [Charles] said I was welcome at Balmoral, but he didn't want... her. He started to lay out his reason, which was nonsensical, and disrespectful, and I wasn't having it."

Harry clapped back at his dad's disparaging remarks about Meghan, snapping: "Don't ever speak about my wife that way," reports Aberdeen Live.

He goes on, illustrating Charles' flustered response: "He stammered, apologetic, saying he simply didn't want a lot of people around. No other wives were coming, Kate wasn't coming, he said, therefore Meg shouldn't. Then that's all you needed to say."

The Queen died at Balmoral, her beloved retreat, at 3.10pm, indicated by her official death certificate, yet Harry only reached Aberdeen International Airport later that evening at 6.46pm.

Meghan was seen this weekend at a book club session hosted by her close friend Oprah Winfrey in California, where her children's book The Bench and Harry's autobiography Spare were showcased in the 'hometown heroes' section, celebrating local authors. This comes amidst whispers of underlying tension.

Back in the UK, Charles, 75, and Queen Camilla, 76, marked the two-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's passing on Sunday by attending a church service near Balmoral in her memory.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commemorated the occasion with a social media post: "Today marks two years since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II... The late Queen's dedication to the UK and Commonwealth taught us that whatever challenges our country faces, the value of service always endures."

"For the 70 glorious years of her reign, she was at the heart of this nation's life. Today we honour her memory."
