A 14-year-old girl who fatally shot her mother and then invited a friend to see the woman's corpse has claimed she was insane at the time of the incident.

Carly Madison Gregg was arrested in March in connection with the fatal shooting of her 40 year old mother, Ashley Smylie, and the non-fatal shooting of her stepfather, 38-year-old Heath Smylie, in their home in Brandon, Mississippi. The teen, who was charged with murder and attempted murder, pleaded not guilty and is being tried as an adult.

Her lawyer said Gregg was taking an anti-depressant when she shot her mother and added that videos appeared to show the teen singing to her dogs after the shooting. Prosecutors are expected to push back against Madison Gregg's insanity defence.

Rankin County Investigator Zachary Cotton testified at the court hearing saying dispatchers were called to the home by the teen's stepfather who reported the shooting on March 19. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an injured man at the door and a dead woman inside a bedroom.

Mr Smylie told police he had been shot in the shoulder by his stepdaughter after she killed his wife. Gregg had fled the scene but was later found about a half mile away from the home and taken into custody, reports the Mirror US.

Chilling footage from security cameras at the family home revealed the teenager entering her mother's bedroom, followed by the sound of a gunshot, a scream and two more gunshots. Cotton explained that the victim was shot twice in the face and once in the chin.

Following the horrific incident, Gregg sent a text to her stepfather, who wasn't home at the time, asking when he would be back, Cotton added. Mr Smylie arrived at the crime scene approximately 45 to 50 minutes later, according to the investigator.

However, before her stepfather returned, Gregg sent a desperate message to a friend, urging her to come over and claiming it was an emergency. She chillingly asked her friend if she had ever seen a dead body before and after the friend said no, Gregg proceeded to show her deceased mother, revealing the weapon she used to commit the murder.

The teen shockingly told her friend that she had three more bullets intended for her grandfather. Mr Smylie informed detectives that he was shot as soon as he entered the house, noting that Gregg's eyes were "really big" and she appeared "like she had seen a demon."

Gregg's stepfather revealed that she was screaming before running off. Cotton, the investigator, stated that a friend of the teen was in the backyard when the second shooting occurred.

Carly Madison Gregg
Carly Madison Gregg is being charged with one count of murder in the death of 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, an algebra teacher at Northwest Rankin High School.

It was reported that Gregg had been on prescription medication, including anti-depressant Lexapro, leading up to the tragic incident - and allegedly, she had changed her medication just a week prior to the shooting.

Her classmates at Northwest Rankin High School, where her late mum served as a teacher, were left stunned after the shooting. They claimed that the "red flags" she exhibited were dismissed as typical teenage angst.

One classmate shared: "She was acting normal that day, but she had always been saying things about how she hated her mom. Carly said a lot of alarming things but people never took her seriously because she never did anything to act on them before.

"She said things like 'I'm gonna kill her (her mother)' but in the teenager angst way, which in hindsight to everyone now were red flags that we didn't see."

One classmate revealed that although Gregg frequently expressed intense dislike for people she wasn't fond of, including her own mother, no one raised any alarms as "it always sounded like venting" and had "always been that way."

Another peer alleged that Gregg had "death symbols" displayed on her laptop. Yet another classmate stated that the teenager's animosity towards her mother was not returned, with the late teacher consistently "talking so proudly" about her daughter to her students.
