Irish Paralympics star Deaton Registe has been subjected to sickening racist abuse online, which Paralympics Ireland has described as "not acceptable".

The Tyrone native finished sixth in his first Paralympic final last week in the SB14 100m breaststroke as he recorded a personal best time of 1:07.82.

Registe, who has an intellectual disability, was subjected to racist abuse ahead of the final, but he wasn't aware of it. However, Paralympics Ireland told the 20-year-old's mother.

Paralympics Ireland CEO Stephen McNamara said: "It is just not acceptable and I think everyone in Ireland would support that.

"We have spoken to the athlete and the athlete’s family, and we don't want that to happen again.

"We can’t guarantee it won’t happen again, but what we have seen across the whole Games is such a huge swell of support for all of our athletes."
