The Republic of Ireland take on England this evening in their opening game of the UEFA Nations League.

The Aviva Stadium in Dublin is the venue for today’s game, which is due to kick-off at 5pm.

RTE 2 and ITV will be showing the game live, with streaming available on both of their respective online players.

It’s the start of a new era for the boys in green today as former Iceland and Jamaica manager Heimir Hallgrímsson leads the team into battle for the very first time.

There’s plenty of change in the English dugout as well with interim manager Lee Carsley taking charge of the three lions in their first game since losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain in what turned out to be Gareth Southgate’s last game in charge.

It’s a new era for both teams and with a number of fascinating storylines - not least the return of Declan Rice, Jack Grealish and the aforementioned Carsley, it promises to be a cracking occasion.

A full house of almost 52,00 is expected to roar on the Hallgrimsson's charges.

Campaign group calls for new English anthem over Carsley criticism

“Carsley has every right to not sing the anthem. But this is a timely reminder that we need a new anthem, one that speaks for everyone, that is about country and the people, not king and god.

“We are a free country and freedom of speech includes freedom not to revere a king.

“We should be able to raise the roof singing our national anthem, we should not be put in a position where that conflicts with profoundly held beliefs.

“Whatever Carsley’s reasons, he should have the support of every democrat and everyone concerned about freedom of speech.”

Good afternoon and welcome to the blog

Republic of Ireland’s UEFA Nations League campaign kicks off today with a home clash against England at the Aviva Stadium.

Heimer Hallgrimsson will be in the Irish dugout for the first time since taking over from John O’Shea, who spent the first half of 2024 managing Ireland on an interim basis following Stephen Kenny’s departure.

O’Shea is still on the coaching staff as Hallgrimsson’s assistant, providing a direct link with the Kenny era.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game this week, O’Shea spoke of his desire to park the drama surrounding return of Jack Grealish - a former Ireland underage star - and three-capper Ireland international at senior level Declan Rice.

“He's not here, he's in the England squad, so we can't keep talking about it,” said O’Shea when asked about Rice.

Team news will drop at around 4pm and we will have live updates from the Aviva throughout the evening.
