Gareth Southgate has already landed a new job as a UEFA technical observer after quitting as England manager.

Southgate resigned from his role as Three Lions boss in July, bringing an end to eight years at the helm. He departed after England's European Championship final defeat to Spain, the country's second in succession after losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 showpiece.

Lee Carsley is now in interim charge of England having temporarily stepped up from his position as U21 manager. Southgate, on the other hand, is keeping himself busy working for UEFA, a role he will hold until at least the end of the current season.

He joins a long line of managers who have taken up similar positions, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and former West Ham chief David Moyes. The Scotsman worked as an observer for UEFA during Euro 2024 and has continued in the role since, alongside Southgate.

Current Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has also performed the role in the past and has explained what it entails. "Instead of just watching the game for a specific reason in my capacity as a national team coach, you are watching it in a more holistic way and appreciating the development of the game and the competition itself," Martinez told UEFA's website.

"It could be different types of performances, from young players, for example, or the way the competition is getting tougher physically and cuter tactically with the new trends within the competition."

Southgate is keeping himself busy for the moment, but he will be a man in demand in the dugout following his exploits with England. The 54-year-old was reportedly a target for Manchester United earlier in the summer before the Red Devils opted to stick with Erik ten Hag. Given his experience and availability, it is unlikely he will be on the sidelines for too long.

As for the Three Lions, it was suggested the FA didn't want to lose Southgate and were keen for him to lead the country into the World Cup in 2026. However, once his decision was made, attention soon turned to who would succeed the former Middlesbrough man.

A plethora of names have been linked to the vacant role, including Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, and Eddie Howe. But, in a similar fashion to how Southgate was handed his break with the Three Lions, the FA chose U21 boss Carsley, albeit currently on an interim basis.

The former Everton midfielder takes charge of his first game against the Republic of Ireland, before England host Finland on Tuesday night. "It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis," Carsley said after his appointment as interim boss.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
