A group of around 20 people held a protest outside Mountjoy Prison today demanding the immediate release of teacher Enoch Burke, who was jailed again during the week for contempt.

He has now spent over a year in custody in the row over transgenderism at the Wilson Hospital School, Co Westmeath.

The prison authorities reported no incidents and that the protesters were well behaved.

They were shouting chants of "Free Enoch now."

Devout Christian Enoch had refused to address a former transgender student by a pronoun in accordance with the school rules and was subsequently sacked.

He has repeatedly breached a court order banning him from protesting on the grounds of the school.

Enoch Burke was released from prison for the summer while the school shut down for the holidays but he resumed his one-man demonstration when the students returned and was sent back to prison on Monday night by the High Court.

A Mountjoy source: "He shouldn't really be in here - he is not a criminal and he has his Christian views. He and his family feel very strong about the whole transgender argument.

"Many of the inmates support him."
