When it comes to 'Easter Eggs', Taylor Swift is a 'mastermind'. The singer loves creating clues to hide in her music and fans enjoy unravelling hints. But on a few occasions Swift's secrets have been exposed, like when fans uncovered the codename for her 2020 album 'folklore'.

As it transpires, the songwriter uses secret names for her albums before she shares them with the world. But she found herself in a hilarious mix-up a few years ago when fans discovered the codename for 'folklore' and convinced themselves it was a clue for an upcoming album. As fans now know, it wasn't meant to be a hint.

In fact, it was accidentally released by Swift's team, prompting the singer to share how she creates her codenames when she held her hands up about the mistake.

Swifties first grew suspicious after the singer released 'folklore' and fans spotted a word hidden on the album cover. If you were to zoom into tree branches in the upper right corner, you could spot the word 'woodvale'. When Swift then shared her second surprise lockdown project, revealing 'evermore' as a sister album to 'folklore', fans went wild. Many were convinced she was planning a trilogy that would be completed by a 'woodvale' album. However, they were quite a way off the mark.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Swift said: "When I was making 'folklore' I was too afraid to even unveil the title of the album to even my closest teammates and management. I didn't tell anybody the album title until right before it came out.

"So, I came up with a fake code name that had the same amount of letters as 'Folklore', chose a random name, chose 'Woodvale', wanted to see how it would look on the album covers, mocked them up, and then decided I don’t actually want to have a title on the album covers and we forgot to take the fake code name off one of the covers."

Swift also revealed 'evermore' was named 'November,' yet another red herring with the same number of letters as the real title.

Unsurprisingly, fans remain in the dark when it comes to most album codenames. The names are meant to be secrets after all, but fans do have their suspicions.

For instance, some Swifties suspect 'Karma' could have been the codename for what eventually became 'Reputation'. However, other fans think 'Karma' refers to a different project Swift scrapped in favour of 2017's 'Reputation', as they say she dropped hints pointing toward a Karma-themed album in 2016.

Whether or not there's a lost 'Karma' album remains to be seen, but if it does exist, Swift will need an ironclad codename.
