Ireland weather maps show incredible turnaround as Met Eireann offer silver lining in bleak forecast

With Ireland now in meteorological autumn, many people will be hoping for a smooth transition into the season - and a break from the unsettled conditions that have dominated recent weeks.

Unfortunately, Met Eireann's latest forecast paints a different picture, suggesting that the weather will remain challenging with frequent rain expected.

The national forecaster has issued a bleak outlook for the upcoming week, indicating that low pressure systems will dominate the weather, particularly southern and eastern regions. It said: "During this period (September 2 - September 8), low pressure will be close to the south and east of Ireland. As a result, conditions will be generally unsettled through the week with spells of rain and showers. Rainfall amounts will be higher than average for many areas, with the exception of Atlantic coastal counties. These regions will be more sheltered in the southeasterly airflow, leading to near average or slightly below average rainfall."

With rainfall levels expected to be above the norm in many areas, it added that there "is the potential for rainfall warnings" to be issued as conditions deteriorate.

Despite the gloomy prediction, the meteorological service has offered a small silver lining, noting that high pressure will "occasionally" affect the country, potentially bringing brief periods of dry and warm conditions.

It added: "High pressure to the northwest will occasionally affect the country, so some drier spells may occur also."

Weather maps appear to support this outlook, tentatively showing temperatures of up to 23C in parts next weekend. While subject to change this far out, they currently show 21C highs on Thursday, continuing to rise before peaking at 23C on Sunday.

In the meantime, Ireland can expect the upcoming days to remain unsettled, with frequent rain. Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, Met Eireann said: "Monday morning will be overcast, wet and misty across much of the eastern half of the country with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, heaviest for eastern counties. Drier elsewhere with sunny spells gradually breaking through. This afternoon a clearance will slowly extend from the west, as the last of the rain and drizzle clears into the Irish Sea. This evening late spells of sunshine will occur widely. Cooler than recent days with highs of 15C to 18C in light northwest breezes. Monday night will be generally dry but with increasing cloud feeding in a few showers to Atlantic fringes later. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 11C in just light westerlies.

"Tuesday will be a cloudy but largely dry with just well scattered showers moving eastwards in the flow. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C in moderate northwest winds. Quite a cloudy Tuesday night in store with scattered showers drifting down over the country. A light northeasterly breeze and lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C .

"A cloudy start Wednesday then with some lingering showers slowly clearing. Some bright or sunny spells will develop at times during the afternoon but a few more showers will push in over the south and west. Feeling cooler too with highest temperatures of 14C to 18C and moderate northerly breezes. Any showers will largely die out Wednesday night with long clear spells developing. A cool northerly breeze will persist with lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C and some mist or fog patches forming overnight.

"A mix of cloudy periods and sunny spells Thursday with just a few isolated showers during the afternoon. A light northerly breeze and highs of 16C to 19C.

"Latest indications for Friday are for a cloudy day but a dry start for most. However, rain is likely to move in across southern counties later in the day. Light northeasterly winds and highs of 16C to 20C."
