Bruno Fernandes claimed there was no need to "make it individual" as he addressed Casemiro 's blunders which led to Manchester United's embarrassing defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The Red Devils were comprehensively beaten by their arch rivals as they suffered back-to-back defeats to leave Erik ten Hag facing questions after just three games of the season. United contributed to their own downfall as Liverpool scored twice in the first half.

Both goals owed to Casemiro errors with the Brazilian first making a misplaced pass in his own half before he tried to dribble up the pitch, only to be dispossessed by Luiz Diaz in a dangerous error - allowing the Reds forward to score his second of the game.

Casemiro was tipped to leave Manchester in the summer after a poor second season, but retains the faith of other senior figures in the dressing room as captain Fernandes refused to blame him personally for the team's failure on Sunday.

He told Sky Sports : "The goals are always self-inflicted. You need to commit a mistake to give them the goal. We don't need to be pointing fingers at everyone. that won't help us now. When you concede a goal you can't just point at one mistake. What's the point in saying Casemiro lost the ball or Kobbie [Mainoo] lost the ball? They lost the ball because they wanted to be brave. It's part of football. Don't make it individual.

"Casemiro is more experienced than me. I don't need to tell him anything, he knows what football is about. He's played for the two best clubs in the world."

Casemiro's mistakes led to him being hooked at half-time. Such a decision from the manager was always going to attract headlines and the ex-Real Madrid man was replaced by youngster Toby Collyer.

Despite Ten Hag's ruthless decision the United boss maintains that Casemiro will recover for his regrettable Sunday and continue to be an important figure for the team. That is despite the arrival of Manuel Ugarte, who will look to usurp the Brazilian as a starter after his deadline day switch from PSG.

"You know the game. He knows the game," said Ten Hag. "He will go on, we will go on. He's a great player. We will continue this season to improve the team and the players. He improved, and showed so often, that he is a great character. We all have seen great moments from him, being decisive in the midfield. He will show it again, I am sure he will bounce back."
