Dawson's Creek star Obi Ndefo has died at the age of51

The actor was best known for playing Bodie Wells in the US drama, alongside Katie Holmes, James Van Der Beek, and Joshua Jackson.

The sad news was announced by Obi's sister Nkem Ndefo. She took to Facebook to share with fans: "Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother and knowing he's finally at peace." Alongside it, Nkem posted a photo of her and her brother smiling and hugging outdoors.

Obi lost both of his legs when he was hit by a car in August 2019. He had been packing up his shopping at a supermarket carpark in Los Angeles when an SUV veered out of lane and collided into him. The terrible accident left Obi having his left leg amputated.

The actor said afterwards that he refused to be negative about the ordeal. "What's the alternative, this is so horrendous what's happened to me. Why would I compound that by feeling bad about it?" he said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"There is no choice for me," he added. "So there's a sort of rigor to me and I think, 'OK my legs are severed, I don't know how to do this but i do know how to this.'"

A GoFundMe page for the injured actor raised over $200,000 to pay for prosthetic legs and for the remodelling of Obi's home to make it more accessible.

Before landing his role on Dawson's Creek, Obi graduated from Yale University's drama school. He went on to land roles in The West Wing and Star Trek: Voyager. However, fans will know him best as Bodie Wells in Dawson's Creek, which he starred in from 1998 to 2002.

After Obi's sister shared the sad news on Saturday, Obi's former castmate Mary-Margaret Humes - who played his mum Gale Leery - posted her own tribute, as she called the late star a 'sweet warrior.'

"These words don’t come easy," she said. "It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior."

Dawson's Creek was an American teen drama television series about the highs and lows of circle of a close-knit friendship group lived in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts. It ran for six seasons, from January 20, 1998, to May 14, 2003.

The series made huge stars of its cast including James Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery and Katie Holmes as his best friend and love interest, Joey Potter.
