Irish hopeful Charlie Smyth has not made the 53-man roster for the New Orleans Saints after the NFL outfit made their final changes ahead of the new season.

Down man Smyth signed for the Saints earlier this year after impressing at the NFL combine, and further impressed during preseason but failed to grab a spot in the finalised roster.

The 22-year-old had a moment to remember, scoring a game-winning field goal against the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month.

But Smyth was beaten out for the kicker spot by Blake Grupe, who played for the team all of last season.

Another NFL team can now sign the Mayobridge man over the next 24 hours. Failing that, he can be signed to a practice squad, and the move will be incentivised by the International Player Pathway Program which allows team to have an extra roster spot for International players.

Smyth was also hampered with a groin injury going into the final preseason game which may have hurt his chances.

Derry's Jude McAtamney also failed to make the cut with the New York Giants despite his heavy involvement in the NFL preseason. The New York Giants used to International Player Pathway Program to add McAtamney to their practice squad.

Enniskerry native Dan Whelan will again punt for the Green Bay Packers this season after he is expected to make their 53-man roster.

Former Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit will likely fail to make the Kansas City Chiefs' final roster.
