A teacher has blasted parents for sending their kids to Reception in nappies.

The woman, who uses the name Ms3rdGrade on Tiktok, posted a video on the app, in which she said she has seen "so many five-and six-year-olds" sent to school wearing nappies.

Utah passed a piece of legislation in March, which made toilet training a required "condition" for enrollment in kindergarten, which is the US equivalent of Reception. The teacher in the video, though, works in the state of Arkanas, where such legislation hasn't been passed.

And in recent years in the UK, teachers have also reported children are starting school unable to use the toilet. One school in Walsall, West Midlands, was even forced to hire a full-time “nappy-changer” because so many pupils are not toilet trained.

But Ms3rdGrade took aim at parents in her tirade. She said: "Diapers in kindergarten- this has been something that's been a conversation with fellow teachers for the past several weeks now. The amount of kids in diapers in kindergarten- I had no idea. The more I talk to some kindergarten friends, and they tell me how many they have."

The teacher, who says she has two grown-up children, added: "I know I cannot be alone. I remember when my kids went to school...your child had to be potty-trained before you could send them to kindergarten.

"I am in the state of Arkansas, and I learned last night that in the state of Arkansas, it's not required. Why? Did that change? Why do we have so many five-and six-year-olds still in diapers?

"I'm not talking about special needs [kids]. You kindergarten teachers that are dealing with this, bless your heart... I was complaining about the breath yesterday...if you have two or three kids in diapers, who."

The video, seemingly shot in a classroom, has been viewed more than 628,000 times since it was posted on Thursday. Her views expressed in it echo those of a British primary teacher, who last year said "it's not her job to potty train children". A mum dropped off her six-year-old child, who had not been potty trained, at school without any nappies.

The teacher in the TikTok clip continued: "Am I alone on this? Do you have a lot of diapers in your school right now?" Despite the criticism and Utah's move, there are laws that prohibit schools in New York and New Jersey from keeping children out of a class because they lack potty-training.

According to the NHS, parents in the UK typically introduce sitting on the potty as part of their child’s normal day when they’re around 18 months to two years.
