Cora Staunton shook off last weekend’s eligibility row that marred her return to the pitch to help save Carnacon from league relegation earlier today.

Last weekend the GAA legend and current coach with Ballina Stephenites men’s side fired a hat-trick of goals against Castlebar Mitchels in a 7-4 to 1-12 win.

But Castlebar objected after it emerged Staunton’s registration hadn’t been completed in time for the game and the Mayo County Board upheld the appeal.

Carnacon, who won 21 Mayo Championships in a row until Knockmore brought that run to an end in 2021, were plunged into a relegation play-off against Moy Davitts.

However, they safely negotiated the tie to retain their top league status with Staunton among the goals again.

Last weekend, the 42 year old RTE pundit was in vintage form on her return to action, with one of her goals a blasted 20 metre free, which beat six players to hit the net.

Staunton, who last lined out for Mayo in 2018, played Women’s AFL for five years for Great Western Sydney Giants, hitting 55 goals.

She holds 10 All-Ireland senior titles - four with Mayo and six with Carnacon - and 11 All Stars.
