Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho insisted "God has something planned for me" in a cryptic post after being left out of the starting XI by Erik ten Hag once again in their 2-1 loss to Brighton.

The Argentine has been forced to play a substitute role in both of United's first two games this season, playing the final 30 minutes against Fulham and the Seagulls - assisting Joshua Zirkzee's late winner against the former at Old Trafford.

But his late salvo wasn't enough to give him a starting spot against Brighton and he was unable to affect the game before Joao Pedro nodded in a dramatic header for Fabian Hurzeler's side in stoppage time.

Earlier in the game Garnacho did think he had put the Red Devils ahead in the 69th minute - moments after coming on - when he tapped home from Bruno Fernandes ' ball across the face of goal, but in a strange turn of events the goal was chalked off for offside after Zirkzee got in the way of the shot as it crossed the line.

Garnacho was clearly devastated and couldn't hide his frustrations after the game - having been snubbed by Ten Hag then agonisingly having the goal taken away from him as he posted a message on social media platform X.

Posting a picture of himself celebrating his offside goal against Brighton, he wrote: "God has something planned for me, trust the process."

Before the game, Ten Hag had spoken out about Garnacho's potential after being asked by a journalist if he thought the player was " world class".

"You have gone very quickly," Ten Hag responded. "World-class is something where he has to go a long way. He has a high potential, 100 per cent. But last season he contributed and he can be a starting-XI player.

"It starts with hard work. That has brought him to where he is now and that will bring him to being a world-class player because I agree he has the potential."

The Dutchman urged him to "show" he deserves more starts, insisting he was "very pleased" with the impact he made against Fulham, along with goalscorer Zirkzee.

Garnacho enjoyed an impressive season with United last season and was one of the bright sparks amid a difficult campaign, scoring nine times and providing four assists.
