Matheus Nunes' future at Manchester City is uncertain following the unexpected return of Ilkay Gundogan, with Liverpool among the interested parties.

Gundogan rejoined the English champions on a free transfer from Barcelona earlier this week, after his time at the Nou Camp ended abruptly within just a year. This surprise comeback could spell trouble for Nunes, pushing him further down the pecking order.

The Portuguese international, who joined City from Wolves last year in a £54million deal, has found it difficult to make an impact under Pep Guardiola, managing only 17 league appearances last season.

According to the Daily Star, Newcastle have been keeping an eye on his situation, but can only offer a loan deal at this stage of the window. Liverpool and Chelsea showed interest earlier in the window, and now West Ham and Everton are also monitoring developments, with a loan offer and £40m option to buy being the most likely package.

Despite turning down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, the 25-year-old former Sporting star is frustrated with his lack of game time and would welcome the opportunity to revive his career with a move to another Premier League team. And as seen with players like Julian Alvarez, he won't stand in the way of those looking to leave.

The Spanish manager acknowledges that he can't promise Nunes anything more than a minor role this season, a situation made worse by the return of City's Treble-winning captain Gundogan.

City have already bid farewell to a host of players this summer, including Alvarez and Kalvin Phillips. More exits are anticipated before the transfer window slams shut on Friday, with Nunes and his compatriot Joao Cancelo expected to be among those heading for the exit door.

The champions have been reasonably quiet in terms of incomings, with Savinho the only other arrival along with Gundogan. That hasn't impacted on a strong start to the season, including two wins from two - scoring six goals in the process.

But Guardiola has suggested that any more signings are unlikely before the window closes next Friday, unless injuries force his hand. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, maybe something happens in terms of injuries – hopefully not – or the market provides something unexpected that financially suits, or tactically."

Mateo Kovacic limped out of the win over Ipswich at The Etihad Stadium, with Rodri yet to make his first appearance of the season after his Euro 2024 exploits. Guardiola said on the knock to KovacicL: "I didn’t speak with the doctors. I think it was a knock.

"Liam Delap, we know from here, is so aggressive with that. We have six, seven days until the next game and we will see if he can recover."

As for Liverpool, they are the only side in Europe's top five leagues to have not made a single signing, with Arne Slot still waiting to usher in the first arrival of the new era at Anfield. A midfielder could be targeted however, with a move for Martin Zubimendi collapsing after he decided to stay with Real Sociedad.
