Rory McIlroy finished his third round of the BMW Championship with an incredible 423-yard drive, an 89-yard wedge and a four-foot putt for birdie.

McIlroy made the most of the high altitude at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado to hit the titanic drive that reduced a 506-yard par four to a drive and a flick with a wedge.

But, in unique conditions on the PGA Tour, McIlroy's 423-yard drive is remarkably only the fourth longest of the week. The current longest drive belongs to American Sam Burns at 436 yards.

McIlroy hit the drive on his way to a third round of 70 that left him at five-under-par for the tournament, seven shots behind leader Keegan Bradley.

American Ryder Cup captain Bradley has shot rounds of 66, 68 and 70 to edge one shot clear of Australian Adam Scott.

Scott endured a rollercoaster third round after holding a three-shot through 36 holes.

The Aussie hit his tee shot out of bounds off the first tee and was four over par for this round through four holes.

But the 44-year-old recovered well on the back nine to post a two-over-par round of 74.

Ireland's Shane Lowry is one shot behind McIlroy on four-under-par for the tournament after a third round of 70.

The Offaly man is projected to comfortably make next week's season-ending Tour Championship for the first time in his career.
