Police in the UK are still investigating after Manchester United forward Antony was accused of assault by his ex-girlfriend, despite the case being dropped in Brazil.

Antony, 24, was put on a brief period of absence by United in September 2023 after being accused by Gabriela Cavallin, who alleged that the Brazil international had abused her in both their homeland and the UK.

Officers in both Manchester and Sao Paulo had been looking into her claims but it emerged on Tuesday that Brazilian police had found insufficient evidence to charge Antony, who denies any wrongdoing. However, Greater Manchester Police have told Mirror Football that their investigation into alleged incidents which are claimed to have taken place in the UK is still 'ongoing'.

The separate investigation is being carried out by GMP after Cavallin alleged that Antony had attacked her on four different occasions, including once in June 2022 while she was pregnant. Antony attended a voluntary interview with GMP before returning to full training with United in September last year.

Following news that the case had been dropped in Brazil, the 24-year-old's lawyers said in a statement: "The defence of footballer Antony Mateus Dos Santos, in light of the news published by the press this Tuesday (08/20/24), publicly confirms that the police investigation conducted by the 5th women's police precinct of Sao Paulo Civil Police, has been closed without police indictment.

"The defence always believed that the investigations, which were conduct [sic] under seal, would demonstrate Antony's innocence."

Cavallin, who's a DJ, also claimed that United's £86million signing had assaulted her at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Manchester on January 15, 2023, damaging one of her breast implants. Cavallin added that Antony threw a glass at her in June last year, cutting her finger to the bone.

She later took part in an emotional interview with Brazilian TV channel Record and alleged: "He threw water on me, started kicking me, grabbed my the hair, butted my head and made a cut.

"He held me by both arms, threw me on the bed and fell on top of me. At that, my silicone prosthesis dislocated. At the time, it gave me such a shortness of breath that it looked like I was going to die."

Cavallin went on to allege that Antony, who joined United from Ajax in the summer of 2022, had made her a 'prisoner' in their home. "He broke my suitcase, took my handbag, my passport. He broke my mobile phone, he wouldn’t let me go," Cavallin claimed.

"I was a prisoner from 10pm to almost 3:30am. I call it private captivity. I just wanted to get out of there and he told me that I wouldn't leave until I erased everything. I think his mother called his physiotherapist and asked for help. No one could control it."

Antony gave a TV interview of his own in March, vehemently denying the allegations , as the player told Brazilian broadcaster SBT: "I know the truth and it will come out. I know many are butchering me, but the truth always comes out. I'm 100 per cent sure I've never touched a woman, and I'll come up with the evidence.

"I have never assaulted and I will never assault. I'm sure I've never committed physical violence. I have a mother, a sister, and I would never want this to happen to them."
