Wayne Rooney will don the red of Manchester United again after the club confirmed his return for a charity match.

Rooney, now manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle, hasn't stepped foot on Old Trafford's hallowed turf since playing for Everton there in 2017. But next month, when the Red Devils host Celtic in a legends game, their former striker and captain will be back on the pitch for fans to enjoy.

United's all-time top goalscorer will be part of Bryan Robson's squad which will also include former team-mates Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia. The game will take place at 2pm on Saturday, September 7, an international break weekend.

Celtic will be sentimental opposition for Rooney, who wishes he'd played for the Scottish giants before retiring in 2021. "My family and I have always followed Celtic, since I was a boy anyway," the 38-year-old recalled after captaining England to victory over Scotland at Celtic Park in 2013. "My kids have all got Celtic kits and I always look out for the scores."

Rooney's current focus is on managing Plymouth and their new Championship campaign, having got off to a mixed start in their opening three matches. His first game was a 4-0 hammering away to Sheffield Wednesday, after which Rooney revealed that some 'harsh words' were said in the dressing room.

The United legend then picked up his first win in the Carabao Cup first round against fourth-tier Cheltenham Town, with Argyle soaring to a 3-0 victory. On Saturday, Plymouth drew 1-1 at home to Hull City, having taken the lead early in the second half.

Rooney has previously had spells in charge of Derby County, MLS side DC United and Birmingham City, and his two career ambitions are to manage United and boyhood club Everton. "Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to," Rooney told BBC Sport.

"But it's a process I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track. I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I'm hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs."
