Lauren Laverne, the acclaimed BBC presenter, has announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 46-year-old made the announcement in an Instagram post from her hospital bed and shared an emotional message with her loyal fans.

The BBC star, who hosts Desert Island Discs on Radio 4, told her fans and followers alike that she had been diagnosed with the disease, but did not disclose what kind of cancer she has. Thankfully, Lauren shared that it has been caught early, and revealed that she is positive despite the life-changing health news.

"I recently had a cancer diagnosis. It was [thank God] caught early and unexpectedly during a screening test and I am expected to make a full recovery," she wrote as she shared a smiling selfie from her hospital bed.

"I'm in hospital at the moment and wanted to take this moment to say thank you: firstly to medical teams who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness.

"To my family and friends who have been absolutely extraordinary every step of the way - I am so very grateful and love you so much. And of course thank you to my colleagues.... for their support and for giving me the time off that I need to get better."

Laverne also told her 250,000 followers that she wanted to encourage others to keep on top of tests and medical appointments. "If you're avoiding a test or putting off an appointment to get yourself checked out please, please do it today," she wrote. "Half of us will get cancer at some point, and if you do, finding out asap is everything."

The presenter finished her post by saying: "It's usually my job to bring the good vibes on air but any you have to spare are very much welcome here. Sending loads of love to anyone in a similar boat, or who has made it back to shore."

Lauren is well known as a multi-talented presenter known for her DJing, modelling, writing and singing skills, and she hosted Glastonbury for the BBC this summer.

The dedicated star first made her mark in broadcasting as the face of Play UK's series The Alphabet Show, co-hosted with Chris Addison. From there, she went on to present a variety of shows including Planet Pop and Loves Like A Dog for Channel 4, Party in the Park with Mel B, Pop for Five, and Orange Playlist for ITV.

She later became one of the main faces of BBC Two's Glastonbury Festival coverage. In addition to this, Lauren hosts her morning show on BBC Radio 6 and the long-standing radio programme Desert Island Discs.

In 2018, Lauren stepped into Kirsty Young's shoes on Desert Island Discs after Young left due to health issues, following a 12-year stint. This move sparked some controversy at the time, but Lauren took it in her stride.

Off the screen, the presenter has been happily married to DJ Graeme Fisher since 2005. In 2022, she opened up about their love story that began when they worked together in the early 2000s.

When asked about her most memorable kiss, she told The Guardian: "The first with my husband, 20 years ago. We worked together on a pop TV show in the early 00s."

"He invited me to a gig and we both thought other people would come, but nobody did. We realised that it was Valentine's Day and ended up getting together."

Two years into their wedded bliss, Lauren and Graeme welcomed their first child, a son named Fergus. By 2010, they were a family of four with the arrival of their second son, Mack.

In the same interview, Lauren offered a rare glimpse into her life as a mother and shared her fears about ageing. Speaking about her sons, she expressed her wish to leave them "the knowledge that they were absolutely adored for exactly who they are". When asked about her fears of growing older, she simply said: "Losing people."
