Locals in Dublin were urged to shut their windows on Wednesday night after smoke flames travelled across the M50 following two fires.

Dublin Fire Brigade were rushed to the scene of a vacant building fire in Ballyboden, sending out five fire engines and a turntable ladder to the scene of the blaze.

As these crew members tackled one blaze, more firefighters were dispatched to deal with another fire in Ticknock, with three fire engines being sent out to a vacant building that the brigade deemed derelict.

Smoke from the flames of both fires was spread across the capital due to heavy winds in Dublin. Gusts of up to 48km/h were forecast over the city over the evening, leading to the warning.

A spokesperson for Dublin Fire Brigade warned that a strong wind was driving smoke across Rathfarnham as they battled the fire in Ballyboden, where the turntable ladder was deployed to act as a water tower fighting the fire from above.

They said: “If you can smell smoke we're advising local residents to close all windows and doors as a precaution.”

In a later update, a spokesperson said that crews were expected to be on the scene through the night as they received assistance from other agencies.

They added: “We expect to have crews on scene through the night and have received great assistance from partner agencies as we continue to extinguish the fire.”
