The father of Irish actor Paul Mescal said it was inevitable he would end up on the silver screen – as performing has been in his family for years.
The Normal People star’s dad, Paul Snr, who is also an actor, said they got their love of theatrics from his own father.
He told how Michael, a hard-working farmer, was an “outlier” in his small community when he immersed himself in the world of theatre.

He added: “In all of rural Ireland you have two clubs, the GAA and the drama club. My own father was very much involved in the amateur drama movement in the 1940s, 50s and 60s and he would have won national competitions.
“We were exposed as children to a lot of the big plays in the canon of theatre. I remember being eight going to see One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Paul Snr said from the moment he saw his son on stage, he knew he was special.
He added: “I said to myself, ‘Yes, he knows what he’s doing’.”
