'Why has she had to die unjustly?' Woman murdered by crazed Irish ex in Malta laid to rest
'Why has she had to die unjust

A woman murdered by her crazed Irish ex has been laid to rest, with a priest asking mourners: “Why has she had to die unjustly?”

Tragic Nicolette Ghirxi was stabbed to death last Sunday night in Malta at her home in Malta by Edward Johnston.

The Dubliner, who was 50, had been living on the Mediterranean island where was shot dead by police after he pointed a replica gun at them.

Nicolette was laid to rest at the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Naxxar on Saturday morning. Mourners wore colourful clothing instead of black as they followed the wishes of the Ghirxi family.

Local priest Fr Anton D’Amato made a heartfelt appeal against violence during the service. He said: “We must fight them with action, not lip service. We live in a violent society. We have become so accustomed to violence that we do not take action and turn a blind eye.

“Why has Nicolette had to die unjustly? I am still not able to answer that question. What justice is this when such a vibrant person was murdered this way? What justice is this?”

He described Ms Ghirxi as a person full of light, a ray of hope for everyone who met her. Fr D’Amato added: “Many people were in the same position as me and had no idea what to say. A response I still do not have, but in my heart there is hope.”

The cleric spoke of a “society, more violent than we think,” warning people are becoming too used to this brutality, which leaves many victims at home and in the workplace.

He said: “Do not give up, give each other hope. With words and actions, we can fight violence and injustice. Hope is that we, although finding ourselves in darkness, know that the Lord forgives.”

Fr D’Amato also asked everyone to keep Ms Ghirxi in their prayers. People inside and outside the church hugged each other and there was applause as the coffin was lifted and carried out for burial.

Johnston was shot three times after police believed he was about to open fire and told them he had killed Ms Ghirxi. He had used multiple social media profiles to harass Ms Ghirxi after they had ended a two-year relationship last December.
