'Can we move on?' - Micah Richards doesn't know where to look amid Jamie Redknapp ridicule
Jamie Redknapp cheekily called out Micah Richards on Sky Sports Super Sunday as he looked back on his colleague's torrid time against Chelsea during his Manchester City playing days
Micah Richards was left red-faced on Sky Sports when Jamie Redknapp quizzed him about a woeful performance against Chelsea from his playing days - before swiftly asking to "move on" from the topic.
The former Manchester City defender was on the panel for Sky Sports' opening Super Sunday of the 2024/25 Premier League season ahead of City's clash with Chelsea. Alongside Redknapp and former City and Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge, Richards was providing his insight on the season's first blockbuster showdown.
They looked back at Chelsea's 3-0 victory over City at the start of the 2006/07 season, where a young Richards was given the nod to start. The now-adored pundit was terrorised by Chelsea's then-left-winger Arjen Robben on that occasion.
One clip examined by the pundits featured Chelsea's third goal of the game, where Robben slipped a pass to Wayne Bridge, who breezed by Richards before assisting Didier Drogba's stunning header. Redknapp seemed particularly amused by the old footage of his colleague, which Richards laughed off.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder asked: "What would you say if you saw a player doing that now?” to which Richards replied: "I'd say he got the positioning all wrong," sparking further laughter from the team. As Redknapp continued to jest, Richards half-jokingly pleaded: "Can we move on?"
The 2006/07 season was Richards' first as a starter for City, having broken through the previous campaign. The young full-back went through a baptism of fire against the reigning champions as John Terry gave the home side an early lead.
Chelsea's advantage was doubled when Frank Lampard's long-range effort, aided by a deflection, hit the net in the 26th minute. Drogba sealed their fate with a third goal in the 78th minute, condemning a 10-man City to defeat on the opening day.
Fast forward eighteen years and we're once again poised for an electric match-up at Stamford Bridge. This time it is City who go into the game as defending champions four times over, under the management of Pep Guardiola.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are somewhat of an unknown entity following the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca from Leicester City. Speaking at a press conference ahead of his first competitive game as Chelsea boss, Maresca said: "We are going to try and do our best to win games.
"For me, this is my personal opinion, the big difference between us in this moment and teams that are dominating English football, it's just a matter of time. These clubs worked with the same manager for eight or nine years and here we have been one month. For sure, with timing, we are going to close the gap and hopefully, it can happen very soon."
