A man has been arrested over sinister online threats against Taoiseach Simon Harris.

The man, aged in his 40s, was arrested on Sunday morning and was brought to a Garda station in the north-west region for questioning.

It is understood the threat was issued on a social media platform last week and is believed to have contained a sinister threat on Mr Harris and his young family. It is understood it remained online for a number of days before being removed by Meta.

In a statement issued on Sunday morning, Gardaí said investigators had made an arrest in the northwest region.

“Gardaí investigating online threats against an elected representative have arrested a male in his 40s, this morning Sunday 11th August, 2024,” a Garda statement read.

“The male in his 40s is currently detained under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the Garda North Western Region. An Garda Síochána is not providing any further information at this time.”

A number of investigations have been launched in recent months into threats and harassment of the Taoiseach and his family. Mr Harris said he would not be deterred from doing his job.

There have been a number of incidents relating to the Taoiseach’s security since Harris took office earlier this year. Mr Harris’ Wicklow home was subject to a bomb threat in June. His wife and children were in the house at the time.

On that occasion, no device was found at the property and Gardaí quickly identified a chief suspect in that case. Protesters also showed up at Mr Harris’ home in recent months wearing masks and displaying anti-immigration posters.

It is understood Mr Harris was advised that he should move to the secure Steward’s Lodge in the Phoenix Park. However, Mr Harris preferred to continue living in Wicklow where his young children are in school.
