Fintan McCarthy has been praised for his inspirational message to youngsters after he opened up on his Olympic journey having captured gold.

Cork native McCarthy successfully defended his Olympic title alongside Paul O'Donovan as the pair cemented themselves among the rowing greats.

After returning home and reflecting, the two-time Olympic champion shared a message to aspiring athletes.

Taking to social media, he said: "Here’s the important part and my favourite learning from this whole thing which I cannot recommend highly enough: dream big and find people like mine who support and encourage those dreams.

"If you’d told me when I was a kid getting hammered up and down the Ilen river by my heroes and friends that I’d have two Olympic gold medals I still would have believed you, because of them. It’s been ridiculous amounts of fun and the honour of a lifetime so far."

With the lightweight double sculls set to be axed from the next Olympics, McCarthy also hinted he will pack on the pounds and go up a weight.

"Also have to give quick shoutout to lightweight rowing, it’s been real. Pretty cool to be the last ever Olympic champions but more sad to be saying goodbye to a boat class that’s given me so many opportunities to live the dream along with some savage racing and top class competitors. Maybe it’s time to eat up though?"

And McCarthy was praised for his words, with one social media user saying: "Great words @fintanmccarthy Congrats again to you and Paul."

While another added: "Ah magic Fintan! What fantastic words and pictures. Living legends you, Paul, and Coach Casey."

McCarthy and O'Donovan justified their favourite tag with another dominant Olympic final display as they battled past Italy and Greece to win the gold.

The pair were runaway winners in the Olympic final in Tokyo back in 2021 and go down as one of the great Irish sporting teams. They have made it no secret they plan to return for Los Angeles in 2028.
