Swimming stars Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry have been selected as Team Ireland's Flagbearers for tomorrow's 2024 Olympics closing ceremony.

Sligo's McSharry was Ireland's first medal winner at the 2024 Games, winning bronze in the 100-metre breaststroke while Wiffen won gold in the 800 m freestyle and bronze in the 1500m freestyle.

The pair will represent the record 133 athletes at the closing ceremony at the iconic Stade de France and spoke of their joy after being selected for the honour.

“I was so shocked when they selected me among so many amazing athletes who competed at the Games," said McSharry.

"I am so excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity to be one of the Flagbearers for Ireland. This is a great way to close out an incredible Olympic Games.”

While Armagh's Wiffen added: "I’m so happy, I think it’s a great privilege to hold the flag, and I’m going to hold it high around the stadium and I really can’t wait; it’s a dream come true for me.”

Team Ireland Chef de Mission Gavin Noble added: "It has been an exciting couple of weeks and we will all be very proud to be led into the closing ceremony by Daniel and Mona. This Team Ireland; our centenary team has brought us to new heights, and we are all looking forward to celebrating together, not just in Paris tomorrow night, but when we return to Dublin on Monday.”

The Olympics closing ceremony takes place at the Stade de France with the festivities kicking off at 8 pm Irish time. RTE Two and the RTE Player will broadcast the event.

Team Ireland will end the Olympic Games with a record-breaking seven medals, including four golds. There is optimism they will add one final medal tonight when the Women's 4x400m relay takes place in Paris with Rhasidat Adeleke drafted into the team.
