Two-time PDC World Darts Champion Adrian Lewis has opened up about his hiatus from darts – explaining how the health struggles faced by his wife and daughter took priority.

Last year, 'Jackpot' stepped back from the oche after pulling out of several PDC Pro Tour events. Although Lewis never officially retired, fans were left wondering when the 39-year-old would ever make a comeback.

It now seems that he might be eyeing a return, having teased on a fishing trip with Matchroom Sport's Barry Hearn that he could "have a go" at the World Darts Championship qualifiers this year, reports the Express.

On William Hill 's YouTube show Club 501, hosted by Wayne Mardle, Lewis revealed his new signing with the Modus Super Series – the same league that kick-started Luke Littler's career. He also shared the personal challenges he's been facing, including his wife's incurable kidney disease and his daughter's disability due to autism.

Lewis explained his decision to take a break from the sport, saying: "There were a few reasons really, one was that I didn't have the hunger that I knew I needed if I wanted to succeed. The other one is that my wife has an incurable kidney disease so we're in hospital here a lot of the time and my daughter is disabled, she's got autism and it's too much for me to leave the whole lot to Sarah."

The Stoke-on-Trent native opened up about his initial hesitation to join the Modus Series, but has now suggested a a full return to the sport next year. "Jason Thame asked me if I wanted to take part in the MODUS Series and I was a bit apprehensive but I told him that we'd give it a go next year.

"I'm going to do plenty of exhibitions and corporates with them and once I've done the series next year, I'll see where I'm at with my game."

Lewis also hinted at a possible comeback to PDC Tour events within the year, saying: "If I'm enjoying it, then I'll look to keep it going and go to Q School, don't write me off for any Tour events this year."

Terry Chapman, Commercial Manager for Modus, couldn't hide his enthusiasm about Lewis joining the team: "We are naturally very happy to have agreed to a working relationship with Adrian. And it is a privilege to have him on board."

Chapman praised Lewis's popularity and experience, anticipating an exciting new chapter in his career: "He is a very popular player who has a wealth of experience and still so much to offer. So the next chapter of his career promises to be an exciting one."

Lewis, a two-time world champion in 2011 and 2012, last clinched a PDC Premier event at the UK Open in 2014.
